It seems like everyone in the country is getting snow and icy conditions these days. No matter what part of the country you live in, it's important to practice proper snow and ice removal techniques to keep you and your yard safe during this cold season. Here are a few tips:
- Don't shake branches that are covered in ice and snow. Gently brush off the snow in order to keep limbs from breaking. Also, wait for ice to melt naturally instead of scraping it off.
- Shovel often, even during a storm, to keep the snow from bonding to surfaces. Make sure to get down to the pavement so the sunlight can warm the pavement and prevent ice from forming.
- Be careful when use melting agents or salt to de-ice your driveway and sidewalks. The excess salt can damage shrubs, lawns and plants by drawing water away from their roots.
- Prune your ornamental trees and roses in late winter.
