Proper maintenance is key to maximizing the performance and lifespan of your MTD snow blower.  Follow these snow blower tips  to help ensure that you are getting the most out of your machine:

  • Before performing any snow blower or thrower maintenance, disengage all control levers and stop the engine.  Wait until the auger/impeller comes to a complete stop.  Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground it against the engine to prevent unintended starting.
  • As part of your snow blower maintenance, regularly check bolts and screws for proper tightness to keep the machine working safely.  Also, visually inspect it for any damage.
  • Do not change the engine governor setting.  The governor controls the maximum safe operating speed of the engine.
  • When performing snow thrower maintenance, check the shave plates and skid shoes for wear and damage.  When it's time to replace them, make sure you use original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts.  Using  snow blower parts  that do not meet the OEM's specifications can compromise the safety and performance of your machine.
  • During routine snow blower maintenance, check control levers to verify they engage and disengage properly.  Adjust them if necessary..
  • Make sure safety and instruction labels are in place and legible.
  • Observe proper disposal laws and regulations for gas, oil, etc. to protect the environment.
  • Check the fuel line, tank, cap and fittings frequently for cracks or leaks. Replace if necessary.
  • Do not crank the engine with the spark plug removed.
