How to Replace the Blade on a Riding Lawn Mower - Model 13WX78KS011

Follow these step-by-step instructions to replace the blade on your riding lawn mower.  These steps are for Troy-Bilt model 13WX78KS011.  Depending on  your model number, the instructions may vary slightly.  Always be sure to check your operator's manual for detailed instrctions.

Step 1: Disconnect the spark plug and battery for safety

Turn the mower off and make sure the engine is cool.  Remove the ignition key.  Disconnect the spark plug ignition wire and the red cable from the battery.  Do not allow the wrench to come in contact with any metal. 

Step 2: Engage the parking break

Engage the parking break so the mower does not roll while you are working on it.

Step 3: Raise the deck

Put the deck height lever at it's highest postion.

Step 4: Add support for the deck

Place a wood block under the deck's edge for support and then lower the deck to the wood block.

Step 5: Remove the belt keeper and belt

Remove the belt keeper from around the engine pulley by removing the self-tapping screw.  Then, remove the belt from around the engine pulley

Step 6: Unhook the hanger rods

Remove the bow tie clip rom the let rear side of the mower deck and carefully remove the hanger rod. Repeat these steps on the right side of the mower.

Step 7: Unhook the deck lift rod

Remove the bow tie clip on the deck stabilizer rod and slide the deck lift rod from the mounting bracket.

Step 8: Remove the wood block

Remove the wood block from underneath the deck.

Step 9: Release the PTO cable

Remove the bow tie clip to release the PTO cable from the bracket and release the tension spring from the idler arm.

Step 10: Slide the deck out

Slide the deck out from under the mower.

Step 11: Turn the deck over

Turn the deck over to expose the blades.

Step 12: Secure the blade

Wearing gloves for protection, use the Arnold Blade Removal Tool to secure the blade.

Step 13: Remove the blade

Remove the bolt that secures the blade to the spindle and remove the blade.

Step 14: Assemble the new blade

Assemble the new blade on the engine spindle and tighten the bolts to the proper torque as indicated in your operator's manual. Then, remove the Arnold Blade Removal Tool

Step 15: Replace the deck

Slide the deck back under the mower.

Step 16: Attach the tension spring and insert the PTO cable

Attach the tension spring to the idler arm and insert the PTO cable in the bracket. Insert the bow tie clip.

Step 17: Attach the deck lift rod

Slide the deck lift rod into the mounting bracket and insert the bow tie clip into the stabilizer rod.

Step 18: Attach the hanger rods

Attach the hanger rod and insert the bow tie clip on the left and right sides of the mower.

Step 19: Route the belt to the engine pulley

Route the belt onto the engine pulley.

Step 20: Attach belt keeper

Attach the belt keeper around the engine pulley by inserting the self-tapping screws..

Step 21: Replace the spark plug and battery wires

Attach the red cable to the battery and connect the spark plug ignition wire.
